I'm way behind on posting projects that I worked on last semester. More posts should be coming soon.

The photo in this post is of a project where we had to make a sculpture out of 1000 of something. I made a sample piece from dixie cups and ended up making my final project out of 3 ounce souffle cups. They look like ketchup cups from fast food restaurants. I like the shape that it took on as I continued to add more and more cups.

Wire Prosthetic

In my 3D design class we had an assignment to make a wire prosthetic device. Here is an excerpt from the assignment: "Your assignment is to create an interesting and successful sculptural form that somehow functions as a wearable prosthetic device. You will develop the piece as a response to either a personal or observed dilemma or concern, and the piece should address this throughout the design and execution of the work."

I decided to make an man's arm to go around my shoulder. I wanted to make it look like a piece of jewelry because isn't a boyfriend the ultimate accessory? (wink)

Sorry for the long absence. I have been working on some photography projects over the summer. Here is one I did in my digital photography class with my self-portaits and some photos I took at the drive-in. I was imagining what it would be like to see yourself blown up on the movie screen like that. Thoughts and comments are appreciated.

The objective of this project was to create a module and then repeat it to make a pattern. I chose to sew/embroider paisleys onto a piece of fabric. For now the photo is one from my cell phone. I will update it to a better picture later.

Stallion

In 2D we had an assignment to take a silhouette of an animal and use scaling techniques to enlarge it onto a piece of foam core. Then we cut out the silhouette and did a collage of images that we thought were the opposite of the shape we chose. I chose a stallion like on the Ferrari Symbol. The previous tenants of my house subscribed to "Gun's and Ammo" magazine, so I used cut outs of guns for my collage. To me the guns are the opposite of the wild freedom in nature that the stallion represents.

Shoe Project

My last color project was to pick a song and then paint the feeling/mood of the song on a pair of shoes. I picked the song, "Hearing Damage" by Thom Yorke. I decided to go with ice skates as my canvas. This song to me is very dark and sharp and cold. These are some of my preliminary ideas as well as the skates after I primed them.

WW2 Propaganda Poster

For my color class we each chose a World War 2 propaganda poster and changed the color scheme and design. The object was to change the idea but keep the general composition. I chose this poster that I found online:

I decided to change the color scheme from the mostly monochromatic to split complimentary. I also wanted my poster to be about abstinance and to promote marriage. So I changed the wording and some of the imagery. I first edited it in photoshop and got this:

I decided to do a stencil of the Manti Temple for my figure/ground assignment for 2D. The project was to represent place. This is where my parents got married so its the place where my parents started my family. I took the photograph and then used the stamp filter in photoshop. Then I simplified the design while I was cutting it out. This is halfway through the process.

Before I took the picture of my roommate Katie with the mannequin heads, I had an idea of capturing beauty by taking pictures of a vase. The vase reminded me of the female figure. They mostly ended up looking like a picture of a vase.

My other word was depth. I used the idea of depth perception and shallow depth of field. These glass globes were hanging near the glass-blower at the renaissance festival.

One of my photography assignments was to capture the word Beauty in a non-cliche way. I took a picture of my roommate at the renaissance festival. I am loving photographing with film and using the darkroom to print my images. This is a digital photograph of my print.

My second assignment for Color was to paint two color wheels. One with primary colors out of the paint tube and one with primary colors of our own making. Then we had to tint and shade some of the colors we made.

This was my first assignment for my Color class. We had to paint stripes in colors to represent ourselves. My favorite colors are green and purple so I mixed paints until they got to the shades I likes. It was my first time using acrylic paint.

In my 2D design class we talked about unity in our composition. We had to make a persuasive poster and put it up somewhere on campus. It was interesting to see how long they stayed up. I decided to write the word believe in different languages and then make a mirror image of it and then make a mirror image of that. It made a frame so I added a pictures of the Chritus statue that I took at the visitor's center in Salt Lake City.

Here is the finished product for my heart project. I ended up printing the photos of for this project on vellum paper in black and white. They could be interpreted as blood cells running through my heart. I am happy with how it turned out.

Using Filters in the Darkroom

In my Photo II class we are working on using filters to bring out the contrast and details in our images. I took a series of photos involving the theme "Three Pillars". I took my scooter all around Mesa and Tempe looking for groups of three. This is part of a fountain at the Mesa Art Center. Keep in mind these are pictures of photographs that I printed in the darkroom. The lighting caused a little bit of a glare on the glossy surface of my print.

Heart Work in Progress

Documenting my process. This the basis of my heart map. I will add photos and pictures to the chambers to emphasize what is important to me. To make this drawing I folded a smaller image of a heart that I got from the internet and then folded my piece of 14" x 24" paper and used the grid as a guide to help me copy the image. (there's a name for that method, right?) I used colored pencils for the drawing.

Currently working on two color wheels for my Color Theory class. One will be a traditional color wheel and the other one will be my own personal take using 3 primary colors of my own mixing. This is mostly doodles I did while thinking about my project.

I plan to make a map of the human heart. I will use a anatomically correct version of a heart. I will place photographs of things that are important to me inside of the different chambers of the heart. I will include my family, religion, friends, favorite books and movies. I will also try to incorporate my love of photography into the design. These are all close to my heart and things that motivate me. I will use the colors generally associated with the heart; red and blue.
